What is a Search Engine?

So you have probably heard of Google and maybe even Yahoo! Well these are search engines.
It’s these and others like them, that millions of people use to find exactly what they are looking for.
People do searches for things like ‘blue widgets’ using Yahoo! and Google and then the search engines come back with a list of websites that are relevant for ‘blue widgets’ – easy.
The search engines crawl the internet on a regular basis and look for new information, websites, web pages and content and index them all under categories and tags. So when you go a search it checks it database rather than run around the whole internet looking for what you want.
Each search engines use spiders that crawl all over the internet and all the information and analyses your website and determines what terms or keywords you are most relevant for.
If your website is about ‘Devon holiday accommodation’ you don’t want to appear for the term ‘chocolate chickens’.
Then they decide how popular you are among your competitors. And put you in order of coolness! It’s like a popularity contest for websites.
It’s very much like being cool. There is no set way how to become cool and stay cool. It’s boils down to see what works in making your site cool and what doesn’t. Something that we have had A LOT of practice at – that doesn’t mean we are the Fonze just yet though.
This is a perfect way of marketing because you will be appearing for people who want EXACTLY what you are looking for. Unlike an advert in a travel magazine your accommodation in Devon might get seen by loads of people look for a break in Italy which isn’t any good.
